A brief history of the Euro
The Euro was introduced on 1st January 1999 – replacing the theoretical basket of currencies, known as the European Currency Unit.
Initially, eleven countries within Europe (the recognised economic and monetary union) introduced the Euro. These were: Austria, Belgium, Finland, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Portugal and Spain. Later, in 2001, Greece also adopted the Euro; Slovenia in 2007; Malta and Cyprus in 2008; Slovenia in 2009; and Latvia in 2014.

#1 Different countries have different nicknames for the Euro
The Euro is used so widely, its hardly surprising that different countries and cultures have different nicknames for their shared currency. These include ‘Yoyo’ (Ireland), ‘Leru’ (Spain), ‘Ege’ (Finland), ‘Tuero’ (Germany).
